How to obtain BIS registration in India?



BIS states the Bureau of Indian Standards, and it functions to assure the safety, quality, and reliability of products that customers utilize. BIS Registration in India is voluntary, but the Government of India made it mandatory for some specific products. It has a total of eight central, four regional, and three branch laboratories for the testing purpose. It investigates products during the beginning and surveillance of the operations.


BIS operates Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme under which the overseas manufacturers are granted a license to use the BIS standard mark.

Procedure for a domestic manufacturer


The registration application is required with documents and prescribed fee. After submission of the application, the BIS officer will carry a factory evaluation. A sample will be collected for the test, and if the test results are positive, the registration will be granted within four months after the submission of the application.


Simplified Procedure for Domestic Manufacturer


The applicant submits a report of the product’s sample in a BIS approved lab along with the application. If BIS Officer finds the test reports acceptable, then the officer will verify the factory sites for further validation. Under this method, the license will be granted within 30 days of BIS registration.


Tatkal Scheme


The applicant can get the license under the tatkal scheme. Under the program, the application is processed within the strict timelines, and the total time for processing is specified as 30 days. Further, if any request is received under the tatkal scheme, it will be processed on a priority basis, by strictly following time.


ECO Mark Scheme


Granting eco-friendly products BIS License is a different scheme which is entirely different from the normal BIS registration process. Eco-friendly products should confirm additional requirements as specified in the Indian standard to qualify for the ECO mark.

Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme


Foreign applicants are granted registration for the use of ISI mark under the individually designed scheme within six months time period.

What is the process to get BIS Registration in India?


The simple steps are given below to obtain registration-


  • The first step is to test the product from any BIS recognized laboratory that takes around 15 days.

  • Before submitting the BIS Registration Application, the applicant must make sure that the report is duly assessed and complete.

  • Download and fill the Application Form VI and VII from the official website.

  • Submit the specified documents and Reports with the application. The Test Report should not be older than 90 days. It is necessary to submit the hard copies of the documents within 15 days at the Branch Office of BIS.

  • If the manufacturer is foreign with no branch office situated in India, then the Form is compulsory to be signed by the Authorized Indian Representative, as per the guidelines of BIS.

  • The applicants must apply for a separate Registration number in case they have different products manufactured at various locations.

  • Once the application is filed and submitted, the Officers will verify the documents and grant the Registration Certificate within 15 days.

  • A BIS Registration is valid for two years and can be renewed before the expiry date if there is no change in the registered product.

What is the validity of BIS Registration?


The BIS registration is valid for two years and can be renewed if the product and the standards remain unchanged. License renewal can be done for the minimum period of one year and a maximum of up to five years. Though the restoration depends on the yearly license fee. If the renewal application is made after the validity of the license, the applicant is required to pay a late fine of Rs. 5,000.


What is the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS)?


The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology passed an order that said, ‘No one is allowed to manufacture or store certain goods.’“Electronics and Information Technology Goods Order, 2012 and has given 15 categories of electronic products that are exempted from the trade, import, and distribution. Notify goods does not comply with the Indian Standards. The manufacturer of the listed electronic products are required to apply for BIS registration by following the given process:

  • The Bureau of Indian Standards enrols the manufacturers under the registration scheme.

  • The registered makers have permission to state that their products are approved by the prescribed Indian Standards.

  • The enlisted manufacturers have the authority to discuss that the products manufactured using the Standard Mark informed by the Bureau.

  • Necessities of Chapter IVA of BIS Rules 1987 regulates the Compulsory Registration Scheme.

Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology has expanded its list by adding 50 more products, and these products fall under the category of products that need Compulsory Registration.

  • Manufacturers of the products, located in India or outside India.

  • The separate Registration number is required for products being manufactured at various locations.
